What is algebra exactly? PDF Print E-mail
Clive 'Max' Maxfield
Charles Babbage
I was just perusing and pondering some quotes from James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937). You know... he was the Scottish Dramatist and Novelist best known as the creator of Peter Pan. On one occasion he said: "What is algebra exactly; is it those three-cornered things?" The reason this is of interest is because... ...I just ran across a rather amazing "Algebra Calculator" that would have been incredibly useful when I was at high school and college. For example, using a simple WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor, you can enter an equation just the way you'd write it on paper:

algebra - what goes in
algebra - what coes in

The Algebra Calculator will then do all of the work for you and display the result:

algebra - what comes out
algebra - what comes out

And if you don't understand the steps performed by the calculator, you can request clarification and it will explain everything in excruciating detail.

In fact I can see all sorts of uses for this little rascal. For example, during the school year I spend a lot of time in the evenings working with my son on his math homework. This calculator could be a lot of help when it comes to (a) cross-checking what we're doing and (b) explaining the various steps.

Also, the calculator does much more than playing with equations of the form shown above ... it's also useful for basic geometry and trigonometry (trig functions, right triangle, similarity...), pre-algebra (proportions, ratios, measure conversions... ) and so much more.

Best of all, this little scamp runs on any PC with any version of Windows (including Vista) or any Mac running any version of OS X. If you're interested in learning more, bounce over to their website at http://www.algebrasolver.com

Printed circuit boards for most recent EPE constructional projects are available from the the online store. These are fabricated in glass fi bre, and are fully drilled and roller tinned. Double-sided boards are NOT plated through hole and will require ‘vias’ and some components soldering to both sides.

PCB masters for boards published from the March ’06 issue onwards can also be downloaded from the ‘Library’.
