OK, this is seriously cool. I'm sure that we've all watched the Star Wars films over and over again (tell me I'm not alone). Throughout the series there are numerous occasions when Luke Skywalker is honing his skills as a Jedi Knight. I know that when I saw him controlling things with his mind I thought: "I'd really like to be able to do something like that!" Well, now I can...
Actually this is really, really clever. Way back in the mists of time (circa 1973) I built a brain-wave amplifier. I think this was a project from Practical Electronics (which subsequently evolved into today's illustrious EPE). The idea was to pick up your brainwaves (alpha, beta, gamma and delta), filter out anything that wasn't associated with being in a "trance state" (I can no longer recall which ones we were trying to detect), and then use the ones that were associated with a trace state to trigger a "Pink Noise" generator The theory was that by learning to control your brainwaves so as to generate the pink-noise sounds, you would also learn to put yourself in a meditative trance that would make an Indian Yogi yodel and tap-dance in appreciation. Sadly my little beauty never worked, but that was doubtless due to my youth and inexperience, and also the fact that I didn’t have any test equipment worth speaking of... but we digress... I just saw the most amazing Star Wars Force Trainer on the Think Geek website. This includes a headset that measures your brainwaves and wirelessly transmits the results to a base station that includes a ping-pong ball in a tube. You train yourself to use your brainwaves to control the fan driving air through the tube, thereby controlling the height of the ball. I love this stuff! |
